BALTIMORE -- Maryland Air National members collected food for a food drive this weekend.

Staff Sgt. Brenda Stewart, public health technician, 175th Medical Group, organized the food drive.

Stewart reflected why she started the food drive, "I wanted to give back to the community. I thought this would boost morale for members to donate to give back to the community."

Members brought in non-perishable items: can goods, box rice, peanut butter and baby food. Diapers were also donated.

Stewart had six volunteers help her organize the food drive. They collected food in the dining hall as members came in for lunch. She said some people have brought in one can and others have brought in bags of food.

So far 15 boxes of items have been donated which is scheduled for delivery to the Maryland Food Bank in two weeks.

2011 marks the first year for the food drive. "I am hoping this will be an annual event that people will think of the November unit training assembly and think to bring items in," said Stewart.

"As it grows I will need more volunteers, but that will come with time," she said.
